A courtyard for dining and relaxing was desired between two cottages on this small lot near downtown Carmel-by-the-Sea. Landings were re-configured and grades manipulated to create an outdoor space with lush garden plants, citrus trees, a fireplace, and a dining area. Simplicity of design and construction was important in the confined area. The clients chose hand-painted tiles, artful pottery, and an antique gate to personalize the space.
