A sweeping view of Portola Valley’s Windy Hill is the centerpiece of this landscape. The new house sits back on the site, above outdoor spaces that drop and become smaller as they extend around the pool. Geometric concrete patios and walls contrast with waves of grasses and native groundcovers. In the entry garden, river rock and cor-ten steel edging define drainage zones, which are planted with water-loving plants. Stone seats are sculptural elements under a canopy of bamboo, pistache, and Japanese maples. Two antique iron pots hold plants; the third is a firepit.
